 "He spontaneously generated a sweater-vest!"
Long couple of weeks, very long day. Collapsing. Might do a better summary later, when more concious. Which is a pity, as the "welcome back" showing is really gonna need the full strength of my talents to really "sell it." This week, you see, we're digging in the white trash...

The Tornado Bait: Trailer Part of Terror (2008, 97 minutes) The unlikliest comic-book film ever, this adaptation of a tongue-in-cheek throwback to the days of EC Comics manages the impossible by actually being pretty good. A combo morality-tale and haunted "house" story with ridiculous set pieces and dark Scooby-Doo aspirations it nonetheless pulls off some surprisingly poignient moments of character development and creeping dread. An unfortunate detour towards the torture-horror genre distracts from the film's style, but is otherwise well done.

The Camping Cheat: Motor Home Massacre (2005, 91 minutes) Because I've had a crappy couple of weeks, and I'm taking it out on y'all. I bought this trash for a buck only because I hoped it would go well with the first flick. I paid too much. It's rare that a film will drive one to really appreciate the acting skills... the writing talent... the downright competence of films like "American Vampire" or "Memorial Valley Massacre." Believe me, I've gotta be in a bad mood to subject y'all to the eternity that is this thing's running time. No apologies, it's awful, but I'm thinking it could be the kind of awful that gets massive audience participation.

A bit loopy, a bit moody
So tired. Did not sleep at all last night, between the rainstorm and the cramps (again: you needed to know this, I'm sure). Headache now. The kind of long day where nothing actually gets done. Did see my doctor for a medicine check; we're going to raise the Lamictal from 150 to 200 (but leave the other two meds alone). And that was the target dose she thought would be best in the end, so I guess we're finally going to work up to that; it was originally (or primarily?) an anti-seizure drug, so what it's supposed to do is help the bipolar cycle even out. I just know that increasing that particular drug too quickly in the past sent me into a deep tailspin, so I'm going to have to be on the lookout for that. The thing is, I went into a dark patch this spring anyway, so the worst case scenario is that I go into another one--one that I'm expecting and watching for--and the best is that I don't, and it helps regulate the mood cycling better.

Also, there is no chocolate in the house. This vexes me. Thus, in this spirit of sleep-deprived vexation, I bring you a smattering of linkspam that might or might not provoke more discussion than usual, I don't know.

Headshots of the four main Airbender actors in costume. DO NOT SNIPE AT EACH OTHER IN THE COMMENTS OR I WILL PULL THIS JOURNAL OVER AND COME BACK THERE. I'VE DONE IT BEFORE, I'LL DO IT AGAIN.

Emma Watson on the scene I always think of as Voldemort Ships H/Hr: "I'm going to end up kissing both of [the boys] in the last film. Ugh, it's horrible." But! Emma Watson had the hots for Tom Felton.

Meanwhile: LA Times: Michael Gambon "Sees No Point in Reading" Harry Potter Books by JK Rowling. Maybe I'm crazy, but I love the Gambledore. I'm not saying he's Perfect Exact Book Dumbledore; I'm just saying I love him.

Danny Huston Takes the Crown in 'Robin Hood.' Aw, I love him! I feel kind of warm and fuzzy now.

A major deleted death scene from the director's cut DVD of Watchmen. ... a little less fuzzy now.

What Does Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Green Lantern’ Role Mean For ‘Deadpool’ Movie?

TCM's 'Summer Under the Stars' Posters are Phenomenal.

With ‘True Blood,’ HBO Revives Its Fortunes.

Kodi Smit-McPhee Might Be Oskar in the 'Let Me In' Remake.

'The Wolfman' Gets Down On All Fours: "Rumors of reshoots have been dogging the Wolf Man movie for months. Now we know the truth: instead of paying homage to the original film, the film-makers have reshot key scenes to put Benicio Del Toro on all fours. [...] And then he faces off a much fiercer CG-ed up werewolf. Yes that's right the crew that made a movie based on the Wolf Man now think the Wolfman is lame and did bounding reshoots, so the Wolf Man could be scarier and face off with a werewolf."

 The Minotaurs

Having a second, younger minotaur around is a distinct embarrassment for Minos.

So the old maze-builder upgrades the basement: its walls shift now, its floors sink and elevate, and it’s largely impervious to yarn-based attacks. The guards prod its new inhabitant in and lock the gate.

He gets to the center eventually (put your shoulder to the wall and walk). He and his brother stare at each other in the dimness.

“Hey,” says the junior minotaur.

“Hey,” says the senior.

“I’ve got a plan,” says the junior, and lifts his smock to reveal the labyrinth tattooed on his back.

 NEMESSSIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
My brother sent this to me today and it is the funniest shit I have seen all month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPfxtJ8SQgk

Yesterday, Amy and I went to go see "General Motor Company and Axe body wash present Wil Wheaton in Transformers: Revenge of the Lego Bionicles". I didn't particularly care for it! The entire movie was "hey dudes, Autobots and college kids with attitude are all totally rad", but we were never given one single reason to actually give a shit about any characters. I sure didn't give a shit about any of them, at least. The robot fights were cool, but it was impossible to tell what was going on because all of them look the same. Basically, it was one giant ham-fisted car commercial telling the audience how cool and hip it was, without actually being cool at all.

Amy liked it a lot more than I did... but without spoiling anything, she hit the nail on the head when she asked me "why didn't they just build it on Mercury?". :B

The first pre-San Diego 2009 post
I squished some of my fingers an hour ago, so typing sucks right now!

We're going to San Diego Comic Con next week! I'm a "Special Guest" this year, for the first time, which means I get to do some panels, and maybe you'd be so kind as to attend one or more of them.

Here they are, all three of them:

THURSDAY 12:00-1:00
Spotlight on Bryan Lee O'Malley:
Comic-Con special guest Bryan Lee O'Malley (winner of the Doug Wright, Joe Shuster, and Harvey Awards) talks with legendary comics scholar Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics, Zot!) about Bryan's groundbreaking slice-of-life graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim. From its genesis to the production of the upcoming film version, O'Malley speaks frankly about where Scott Pilgrim came from and where the series is going from here. With a fan Q&A to close the discussion, this is the must attend event of Comic-Con 2009! Room 5AB

(I hear "Room 5AB" seats 500. I have a feeling more than 500 people will show up. Get in early. Me, McCloud, comics, and maybe if you're really good I'll say one or two sentences about this little movie adaptation.)

THURSDAY 3:00-4:00
Oni Press: Panelmonium 2009:
Get up close and personal with trend setting indie comic powerhouse Oni Press. Join in the Q&A with your favorite Oni creators, including Ross Campbell (Wet Moon), Jamie S. Rich (You Have Killed Me), Greg Rucka (Whiteout), Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), and Chris Schweizer (The Crogan Adventures). Get sneak peeks at upcoming Oni projects, news on Oni Press fan initiatives, free Oni comics, prizes, and more! Guaranteed by Oni Press's totally biased employees to be "the most fun you'll ever have at a panel." Room 10

(I will be on this panel somewhat briefly and probably will not say anything important about anything, so if you're just looking for MOVIE INFO, go someplace else! This one's about comics!)

Here's the wild card:

FRIDAY 4:00-5:00
Graphic Novels:
Moderator Tom Spurgeon (ComicsReporter.com) talks to some of the superstars of graphic novels in this lively panel discussion. Joining Tom are Lewis Trondheim (Kaput and Zosky), Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), Seth (George Sprott 1894–1975), Gene Yang (American Born Chinese), Jason Lutes (Berlin), and Derek Kirk Kim (Eternal Smile). Room 8

(It's me, with acknowledged masters Trondheim, Seth and Lutes, plus comics' two other Asians! Oh my god, what? I have no idea what this panel is going to be like. Probably very interesting for you and terrifying for me.)

I don't have my signing schedule just yet, but I think it's going to be something like: late Thursday, midday Friday, and both of those periods on Saturday. I will be leaving on Sunday, and I won't be attending Preview Night on Wednesday, but you've got three days and approximately 5 1/2 specific hours in which to get stuff signed.

As I may have said earlier, there are going to be a few new t-shirt designs, hopefully, and new button designs which I've already shown you, and the rest of the TCAF prints, and I'm not sure what else is left over from olden times. I will be signing whatever you throw at me, but probably not sketching at all due to time and volume.

 Beirut @ Metropolis, July 11, 2009
JEEBUS DOES ZACH CONDON HAVE A LOT OF FANGIRLS OR WHAT

Metropolis was packed out like I'd never seen, even the balcony was standing room only. Cut Copy was a bona fide rave-up, but one can dance to Cut Copy whereas Beirut's riddim inspires gentle hip-swinging at best. XD; Yet the atmosphere was comparable i.e. apeshit bananas. Or maybe I just got stuck with the girls shrieking "WE LOVE YOU ZACH ♥♥♥" after every song. I had had six glasses of wine at H's party beforehand, though (enough that I dozed off and didn't really catch the tail end of The Dodos' opening set), and there are worse ways to attend gigs than happy-drunk with a crowd that is super digging it.

The thing with Beirut that is simultaneously endearing and frustrating is that they technically overreach, which becomes glaringly apparent when presented in the context of a two-week international jazz festival that also encompasses Afripop, reggae, blues rock, dub electronica and whatnot. I listen to them in this framework anyway, meaning for instance that I have every track memorized but have no idea nor care what the words are to most of the songs. It works fine on record, but live I find I mentally expect them to go into a five-minute instrumental jam with brass solos after the second chorus, and instead they just stop. D: Like, at the 3:30 mark Zach Condon waves a hand, everyone cuts off dead in the middle of the note. The set was all of 75 minutes including the two encores, but they got through a lot of songs this way. Made me wish I were seeing them in five years' time. XD; They also didn't have any strings with them, which maybe had something to do with it. In any case the most interesting part for me was seeing if they would do the Holland songs live (they did), and if so, how (by playing the synth parts on accordion and keyboard - LOL undramatic I know).

Anyway this is wrongheaded because early Beirut subsists on ~*feeling*~. It's that particular strand of saudade that cuts across genres and for that matter disciplines - Proust is a kissing cousin - but is rare because by the time artists have the sk1ll0rz to get the inchoate melancholia of extreme youth across to an audience, they're too old to feel it (if indeed they ever felt it - I doubt all artists do). So there's a one-, maybe two-album window... Patrick Wolf had it with the first two, lost it with the third. Blur only had it with Modern Life Is Rubbish (not, interestingly, with Leisure). This is why I kind of think it's wrongheaded to make Burial's nostalgia all about the historical context, because it isn't really. If it weren't that he'd be nostalgic about something else, that's the kind of dude he is.

Back to gig - best moment: literal LOL during the first encore when blond dude raised his trumpet and the distinctive fanfare of "Se Telefonando" rang out over the crowd. What are the chances.** Explains why Zach Condon spent the previous five minutes going ":D?" at each of his band in turn (all of whom responded with massive sweatdrop-face but were CLEARLY OVERRULED). In figure skating parlance, one of those jumps you land in practice but not, perhaps, in competition. Also no one else in the crowd knew the song anyway, fff whatevs indie kidz.

** Okay fine, pretty high considering that they'd already covered "La Javanaise" at this point. A+ lulz Condon, take a page from La Wainwright and let's have us some Piaf next round.

You know, I spent a lot of time yesterday being maudlin about the fact that I'm too fat to fit into my old One Piece costumes, and that even if I lost the weight, I'd have unsightly stretch marks all over my belly, and could never wear any of those belly-baring costumes again...

... and today all I've eaten has been two bowls of Edy's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup ice cream, because it's the easiest thing in the house to prepare.

 Fug or Fab: Christina Ricci
Since this is an opinion site, I suppose I shouldn't have to disclaim that the following is just my opinion. But in this case, I really am guided by one knee-jerk reaction against the material.

88958667.jpg

Empirically, Christina Ricci is a very cute girl, and I like the cut of the dress. But I'm entirely turned off by the fabric. I am not a fan of light-blue satin that's so shiny you could look down at Earth from the moon and groan, "OW, MY EYES." It feels like that color and that fabric should only be married in the form of slinky pajamas or perhaps a bridesmaid's dress -- which makes me wonder if she's simply trying to salvage gowns she'd already ordered for her aborted wedding to That Dude She Was Engaged To For Like An Hour. I appreciate the nod to recycling, if that's the case, but couldn't she have made some sleepwear? Or perhaps a raft of really nice pillowcases?

Just in case my bias against the material has blinded me, though, I shall throw it to you, Fug Nation:

I'm sure it's very difficult these days for some singers to compete with the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, for whom every appearance on-stage -- and off, usually, also -- is an excuse to dress like they've been using crack rock as ice cubes in their diet sodas before licking the backs of South American cane toads and sniffing glue.

So it's really nice to see Lily Allen refusing to pander.

For instance, looking at this much of Maria Menounos, you might think to yourself, "She's pretty. It's a black dress. Nothing to see here."

But you'd be wrong:

88985955.jpg

She IS pretty, and it IS black, but it is ALSO HAMMER CAPRIS. I'm not sure if it's a hammer-capri JUMPSUIT, or if it's a shirt tucked into pants; I suspect it's the former, but I want to believe it's the latter, because a) then this monstrosity is easily undone at the end of the night; b) it means maybe nobody else has done this and we can send ninjas into her house to hijack the separate pieces and destroy them, so it will never be seen again; and c) the fact of anyone making a hammer-capri jumpsuit could break my brain. Unless it's MC Hammer himself, because you can't touch that, as he is 2 Legit 2 Quit. Maria Menounous, though? She is not so legit that she can't give up on this outfit, and I hope after this event, she did.

Another Import Week on Virtual Console Brings the Goodness

Virtual Console has its ups and down, but I'm happy to report that this week looks like a very distinct "up." True, the two games newly available for download today are a far cry from the four or five we were spoiled to expect back in the olden days, though it's all relative, I suppose; two is twice as many releases as we normally see these days. On top of that, however, is the fact that it's an import games week. And headlining is a game I've been hoping to see for ages: Game Freak's Pulseman for Genesis. Mega Drive. Whatever.

Technically, Pulseman shouldn't be fobbed off on us at an import premium, because Sega did make it available in the U.S. via the Sega Channel. Yet it's never been sold on cartridge here, and I suppose that's Nintendo's guiding metric for such things. The Japanese retail release is hardly a common title, either, something I can I say from experience: I've hunted Tokyo and environs high and low for a copy for years to no avail. Needless to say, paying nine bucks for the chance to finally play it is an easy sell for me. (Yes, I know, emulation, blah blah blah; I'm old-fashioned, I guess, and I prefer to experience a good-looking game for the first time through more legitimate means.)

The game won't be up for another hour and change as I write this, and I have to trek to 1UP HQ now and can't download it until this evening. You can expect a Retro Roundup breakdown later this week, though. In the meantime, I'd say it's probably safe to download the game -- it's well-liked by those who've played it, and it's from a reputable developer... albeit one better known for its RPGs than its Gunstar Heroes-esque platform action brawlers. (Though that most recent action game was pretty fantastic.)

Also up for download is a Master System import release called Secret Command. I will be honest: I've never heard of this one, so I'm curious to take it for a spin, too. In the meantime, I'm curious to hear people's impressions of Pulseman.

doesn't that give the end away?
Product Description
Brent Wilson fled the rat race of the Developed World and moved to Nevis, one of the Caribbean’s tiniest and least-developed islands. He took just a few, simple possessions: a suitcase filled with underwear, a copy of Robinson Crusoe, and some string. Brent discovered that Caribbean life is not all sun, rum and sand. His arrival coincided with Hurricane Hugo, and he encountered tarantulas in his toilet and scorpions in his bed. He could barely understand the islanders, and during his first years on Nevis grew close to a nineteen-year-old woman dead over three hundred years. But Brent stuck it out while watching other hopefuls come and go, beaten by the realities of tropical life. Eventually he even managed to find that most unlikely of things—a real, live woman prepared to put up with him. This is an account of Brent’s years on Nevis, and how he finally had to choose between Jacqui, the woman he had found, and Nevis, the island he had come to love.

About the Author
Brent still lives somewhere in the West Indies, where Jacqui continues to put up with him. They live with Dougal and two other long-suffering cats, two dogs, and a free-ranging tree frog called Prince Phillip.

think i could do my part to help promote your music here - maybe you see a possibility

all the best and thanks in advance!

----------------- (I reply) -----------------

Hi there,

I'm afraid that because of the high volume of spam, I don't check my myspace address daily.

I assume that English isn't your first language, in which case, you might not realise that using the phrase "an answer would be nice", following a request for freebies, comes across as rude and passive-aggressive. It might be more polite to say something like "Hi, I wonder if you got a chance to read my recent message? I look forward to your reply".

If you could drop me some details of clubs that you play, I'll pass them along to our record label, and hopefully they'll get a CD out to you / put you on their mailing list.

thanks for getting in touch,

-=Scott=-

----------------- (He gets back to me) -----------------

there is something called 'dick' in my underwear - so it's redundant to tell me how i have to (!!!) write u and which phrases are ok for you*lol

just use the 'spam-button' to avoid any friend-requests of fake bitches and wannabes here - just a little hint for you

furthermore: if you have nothing to say who gets promo material or not...it's just a matter of time i'll find your music on some russian sites ;D

best

t.

----------------- (Tata, thanks for playing...) -----------------

Really?

I can't imagine that you get to use it very much.

I do get to add people to our promo list, that was a polite way of saying that I don't believe you DJ anywhere and you're not getting a free CD.

Our music is already on peer to peer sites, that's unavoidable these days. I'd worry more if it wasn't. If you can't afford to buy a CD, perhaps you could download one from the pirate bay instead of begging for free copies like a child.

Blocked and banned, don't cry too hard, little one.

-----------------

I'm getting old, I should have called him a cunt and blocked him after the 2nd email.

It's exchanges like this that make me want to hang myself. They outnumber the people who get in touch just to say how much they loved a track.

I'm going back to bed.

possibly i should start just doing a 'things i've heard on bobby friction' dump post at the end of the week or something (actually i did think we ought to maybe have a "werld music" thread at some point but i kind of find the idea of "world music" as opposed to anything else* offensive so idk idk) but having got up at 4r5e o'clock and walked four miles and being generally a bit miserable, this song just well pepped me up and is generally very, very ace in a sort of mildly black eyed peas fashion actually I realised there's two things i want to post, so cut time innit )

on a different note, i'm really sorry about the continuing absence of soulja boy hold'em aka ORGAFUN; i never got my internet connected in the house i was in before and am now, err, "no fixed abode" for at least a little while so i guess it's gunna have to be binned and maybe restarted in autumn or something, if i ever manage to actually live somewhere longer than ten minutes. sorry dudes! :(

 Fantasia, Part 2
Daytime Drinking: structurally a stoner road comedy, but with soju. Quieter and more naturalistic, too; everything takes place in Korean equivalents of the sort of off-season British seaside town Charmian and I debated at one point, if it were English the protagonist's theme music would be "Everyday Is Like Sunday" on FOREVER REPEAT. The ending is quite funny but takes a long time setting up. ***/5, add 1/2 star if you're settled in comfortably and matching the characters shot for shot.

(The SAQ doesn't carry soju, but I found some shiso-flavoured shochu and took it to Ced's party after the movie - and H's b-day party the next evening. That was a smooth mf of a 20% alcohol beverage.)

Thirst: after Pride and Prejudice with zombies we now have Thérèse Raquin with vampires, GOOD JOB KOREA. Actually, only Koreans seem capable of making a fucked-up Catholic movie these days, as opposed to a fucked-up movie about Catholicism (or lapsarianism). It's excellent, too, and this is speaking as someone who could never get through a Zola novel or a Park Chan-Wook movie. XD; But when the dreary gritty dog's death at the heart of so many Korean thrillers meets the original depressing-as-shit naturalism... It's also very funny, which maybe makes the difference (vampiric powers carry so many practicalities). And sexy, if you like the idea of Song Kang-ho doing his best Richard Chamberlain in Thornbirds, and Kim Ok-bin (whom I've not encountered before) being basically on fire. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: make this your one vampire movie of the year if necessary, let's not have a repeat of the situation with Let The Right One In where no one paid attention to my words OK.

P.S. A thematically relevant mixtape by [info]elfiepike.

 Brewday 3: The Revenge
We got our shit together yesterday and brewed up another 5 gallon batch of beer. This one was a recipe for Avery IPA from the homebrew store, and it's been so warm that it's already cranking along. I don't even really like IPAs, but I hope it turns out good.

The need for a wort chiller is becoming increasingly apparent. Sloshing a giant cookpot around in an ice-filled bathtub is maybe not the most efficient method of cooling.

The mead is still doin' its thang. It'll be like September or October before we bottle it, and then another couple years for aging.

I don't even drink a lot of beer, but something about fermenting your own is a ton of fun. I'm kinda curious about historical beer recipes, like before hops were used (hint: bitter, mildly psychoactive herbs). Also someday I would like to try heather ale, if only for the history behind it (the first story is particularly epic).

Stuff wot I'm doing in the upcoming weeks
This week (week of July 13th):

Monday:
No specific plans during the day, but my day will probably involve gardening and working on projects. I'm going to the Contradance at the Scout House in Concord in the evening. Feel free to join me - as always, it's $8 ($5 for full-time students under 22). [info]natbudin and [info]v_cat will be joining us this week, at last!

Also (which I did not know until I joined the mailing list), if you want to come out from Boston & suburbs, if you call one of the volunteers will pick up at the Concord train station at 7:15pm, so don't let a lack of a car stop you!

Tuesday: Working until 5pm, but free in the evening. Let me know if you want to change this.

Wednesday: I get to have a needle stuck in my neck, woohoo. Probably dinner with Outer Suburbs folks, unless someone can't host; in which case I may do the English Country Dance/ice cream social in Newton. Sue Rosen is calling, and I know she's an awesome contra caller; don't know much about her and ECD.

Thursday: Working until 5pm; ballroom dancing until 7:30pm (last class!). Possibility of unofficial BSCF afterward? Dunno. I'm open to suggestions.

Friday: Working until 5pm; no plans after work. Let me know if you want to change this.

Saturday: I'm doing the Worldwide Photo Walk in the North End with [info]roguesylph. Need to get my camera ready - haven't used it seriously since New Mexico!

Sunday: In the afternoon is a BBQ at Sally and Jon's in Belmont. Might be helping [info]londo with some stats stuff that day, too.

Next week (week of July 20th):

Stuff is more tentative. Probably working Mon/Tues/Weds since my mom will probably be coming down on Wednesday or Thursday. We will likely spend Thurs/Fri putting stuff together for a fleamarket, and spend Sat/Sun at the fleamarket in Lunenburg on Mass Ave. Stop by and see us!

I am feeling more social than usual lately, so if anyone wants to join me on any occasion, let me know. Chances are I will say yes, unless it's an invitation-only event or unless it's full (like the photo walk).

 'Sup
So. Stuff.

We all went out to New York Pizza for Valkyrie's birthday yesterday (I am slightly obsessed with their Fire Island Fajita pizza. IT COMES WITH SALSA!), and then we went to see The Lovely Emily's new house, which is awesome, although I think the first words out of my mouth were, "God, it's huge! --You got yourself a lotta pokeweed there." But it really is awesome (it has an entire Rock Band room).

Finally going to try to learn to knit. Knittinghelp.com is going to be my first stop. My first project is going to be a practice scarf with a bit of leftover yarn on which I can try out random techniques. More of a "scarf," really. I'd really like to knit Lyra a little knee-length pink cardigan, but... that's probably years away, in terms of knitting experience.

I think I have a cavity between two molars. Maybe it's just gum inflammation, but my hopes are not high. I have a dental cleaning appointment at the end of the month anyway, so... whatever.

Dying of cramps. You needed to know this, I'm sure. But at least when I say "I'm feeling really bad today," you'll know I don't mean it emotionally.

A few key linkspam items:

Ryan Reynolds Lands 'Green Lantern'! I'm going to be really interested to see how this does or does not affect his Deadpool movie. (However: congratulations, Green Lantern movie! You now get a tag.)

New Moon and Cameron!Avatar panels rescheduled to avoid riots; The Horrors of Comic-Con 2009: Saturday; GIRLS AT COMIC-CON! GET IN THE CAR.

First Look: Wes Anderson's Version of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox.'

'True Blood' gets truly great with new episode tonight.

"I am not a hero for turning you on, and neither is John Barrowman."

 Appearances
This summer, I will be appearing at two events (but only one of them in person)

One:

As Shaenon has pointed out, "The Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco (www.cartoonart.org) is organizing "Monsters of Webcomics," a showcase of cutting-edge webcomics work." Some original art will be on display there for this show from August 8 - December 6, 2009. My original art is small and looks exactly the same on paper as it does when it is posted online, so prepare to have a reaction that is blasé. But then look at the amazing line up of talent they have otherwise and prepare to be amazed!

Two:

Vancouver! Are you going to be in Vancouver on August 23rd? So am I! Robin Bougie posted this one. Pretty cool, I haven't seen the west coast in a while, but I miss the mountains.

 Out of the woods.

I think the worst thing about spending a day in the woods -- which is otherwise a perfectly wonderful experience to me -- is the return to civilization when you have to go into a coffee shop dusty, tired, and, my own personal horror, in flip-flops. That last were necessary because I'd soaked my shoes walking in a river. I was fortunately on the other side of the hill, in some town called Felton, where nobody knows me, and the Peet's was pretty deserted.

We had a family get together in Henry Cowell Redwoods. There were no redwoods in the part of the park we were in, but there were plenty of oaks and bay laurels.

I suck at skipping stones, for the record.
